Privacy Policy

1. Who we are
The GUNTEN app is published by Jean-Bastien Lopez, 12 Square du Grand Islot, 35170 Bruz, France. For any question about this policy or your data: lopezjeanbastien@gmail.com.
2. Your data stays on your phone
Your sessions, target photos, scores, gun profiles, ammo inventory, event results, saved ranges and shooter profile are stored only on your device. We have no access to them and they are not sent to any server. If iCloud Backup is enabled on your iPhone, this data may be included in your backup, which is managed by Apple, not by us. On Android, it is excluded from automatic backup.
To delete all your data, simply delete the app.
3. Permissions
- Camera and photos: to photograph and analyze your targets, gun and ammo. All analysis (hit detection, reading ammo boxes, counting rounds) happens on the device. No image is uploaded, unless you use the online identification described in section 5.
- Location (optional, while using the app): to center the range map around you. Your location is neither stored nor transmitted.
- Notifications (Android, optional): only if you turn on a cleaning reminder for a gun.
On Android, the range map uses OpenStreetMap: to show the map and find ranges, only the area on screen (or the city you type) is sent to OpenStreetMap's servers, never your exact location or your identity.
You can revoke these permissions anytime in your phone settings.
4. Purchases and subscriptions
Purchases (Premium monthly, yearly or lifetime) are processed by Apple through the App Store on iPhone, and by Google through Google Play on Android. We never receive your payment details or identity. The app only checks with Apple or Google whether a purchase is active. Apple's and Google's privacy policies apply to these payments.
5. Online firearm identification (optional)
When GUNTEN cannot recognize your firearm on the phone, you can ask for an online identification. The app asks for your consent before the first upload. The following is then sent to our server:
- the starting photo (downsized), with the text the phone read on it; any run of digits that could be a serial number is removed before sending;
- an anonymous install identifier: a random code created by the app, not linked to your name, Apple ID or device. It is only used to count your identifications this month (free plan limit);
- for subscribers, Apple's signed proof of purchase (iPhone) or the Google Play purchase token (Android), which lets us check the subscription with Apple or Google without knowing who you are.
Our server forwards the photo to Anthropic (Claude AI model), which analyzes it to suggest the make and model of the firearm. The photo is not kept by our server or in our logs. Anthropic processes it on our behalf under its commercial terms, which exclude using the data to train its models. The server only keeps the monthly counter of your identifier, deleted after two months. You can erase it anytime in More › Privacy › Delete my data.
The AI never reads or returns serial numbers.
5a. App configuration
At launch, the app downloads a small public configuration file (available offers, partner links) from our server, hosted by Render. As with any web page, the host may technically log the IP address of the connection. No information about you is added to this request.
6. Partner links
GUNTEN may show links to accessories (targets, eye and ear protection, cleaning gear, cases, optics), labeled as "partner links". We may earn a commission on purchases. No data is shared with partners: the link simply opens in your browser, where the partner site's privacy policy applies. GUNTEN never links to firearms or ammunition.
7. Advertising and tracking
GUNTEN includes no third-party advertising, tracking or analytics tools. We do not track you across apps or websites and we do not sell any data.
8. Children
GUNTEN is intended for regulated sport shooting. It collects no data about anyone, including children.
9. Your rights
We hold no data that identifies you: only a counter tied to a random identifier, if you used online identification. You can erase it from the app. You keep full control of the data on your phone. You can still contact us at the address above. Residents of the European Union may also lodge a complaint with their data protection authority.
10. Changes
If a future version introduces another online service (for example sharing sessions with an instructor), this policy will be updated before that service goes live, and the service will be optional.
